Firecracker: Blessing or Cursing

For more than one thousand years firecracker has been looking as a sign of bidding farewell to the old and ushering in the new. The poem written by the famous song dynasty poet Wang Anshi is a notable case in point, which is “The crepitation of firecrackers sends off the old year. Sweet wine and spring wind brings warmth into thousands of homes. Old couplets are replaced with new ones”.

As for firecracker, there are many legends and the most popular one is that in old days people set off it to drive away the ferocious animal called “nian” then the traditional custom has been handed down from one generation to another. It is true that firecracker can add to atmosphere on festivals, and it can make festivals and holiday occasion more colorful and entertaining for both adults and children. Just because of this some experts hold that setting firecracker is an ancient Chinese custom which should be preserved as were the cases with Tomb Sweeping Day and Dragon-boat Festival.

On the other hand, there are many people who say that firecrackers should be banned. They point firecrackers are responsible for fires which destroy property and for injuries suffered both by the people who set them off and by innocent bystander. They also say that firecrackers are a waste of money and resources. Moreover, firecrackers should also take the blame for the atmospheric pollution and noise pollution, and which can cause many diseases. It is reported that the poisonous gas come from firecrackers will do harm to the Respiratory system, nervous system and Cardiovascular System. 

As the proverb says "every coin has two sides". How can we balance the mentioned two extreme and opposite positions? My own point of view is that we should preserve the old custom of setting off firecrackers, while at the same time making them harmless. First, laws and regulations should work out to ban the firecracker form the public places. Second, people should be educated to restrict the firecracker to festival days. Third, this is also one of the issues calling for urgent solution, and that is to standardize the production and circulation of firecrackers, strengthening the management. Meanwhile, ban the manufacture and circulation of fake products, ensuring the safety of people.
